Hadleigh Town Council's role and responsibilities
Allotments
The Council have two sites on Bridge Street and Toppesfield Close.
A waiting list for allotment plots is held in the Town Council office - email us your details if you wish to be included or require further information - admin@hadleightowncouncil.co.uk, or alternatively telephone the Town Council office on 01473 823884
Allotment holders are invited to join an Allotment Association.
St. Mary's Churchyard
The Council maintain the Churchyard and the Church Clock.
Hadleigh Cemetery
The Council own and administer the Cemetery. Please click here for the current price list.
Maintenance of the Cemetery and St. Mary's Churchyard is carried out under contract which is regularly reviewed
The cemetery was opened in 1845 and extended in the 1970's. The site is to the west of the town in a largely unbuilt area. The land rises from the valley of the River Brett in a continuous incline, climbing the hill in an area known as Friars Hill. The Council, being aware of the life expectancy of the current cemetery, investigated in 2011 the possibility of purchasing adjacent land for a new cemetery extension. Having invested in additional land, work on the extension has been completed, and designs are being developed for the site which will include an area for green burials.
Bus Shelters and Public Seats
The Council own various bus shelters and public seats
Public Lighting
The Council is responsible for footway lights, e.g. those in the area of the swimming pool and on Market Square. Suffolk County Council is the street lighting authority
Litter & Dog Bins
The street litter bins and dog bins are provided by the Council. Babergh District Council are responsible for emptying both types of bins.
The Milestone
The Council has adopted responsibility for this monument which has been restored and renovated.
War Memorial
The Council maintain the War Memorial and its grounds
Corks Lane Play Area
Comprises an adventure playground, swings, slide, "springers", picnic area and outdoor gym equipment.
Timperley Road Play Area
Is aimed at the Under 10's and offers swings, 'springers' climbing frame and picnic area.
Layham Road Sports Ground
The Council own and maintain Layham Road Sports Ground as a community sports and leisure facility. Each facility is bookable by groups or individuals by contacting The Council on 01473 823884 or email Layham Road bookings The Ground comprises 12 acres of land providing soccer, rugby and hockey pitches, an artificial cricket wicket, a floodlit all weather multi-sports facility and three tennis courts. The pavilion houses changing rooms and showers. Car Parking facilities can also be booked.
The Council is currently working towards providing a new pavilion.

Advisory Functions of the Council include:
Town Planning
All applications for planning consent in respect of proposed development in the town are submitted for consideration and recommendation
Public Rights of Way
These are mainly managed by Suffolk County Council as they are the Highway Authority. The Council has certain concurrent functions. The Council is consulted on matters affecting the preservation of the public rights of way, e.g. the review of the Definitive Map and diversions and undertakes signposting and some maintenance.
Street Naming
Street naming is not the responsibility of the Town Council, but it is asked to suggest new names to the appropriate authority.
